This blog has been created to look at the Caribbean Pattie. We visit shops and bakeries that offer this Caribbean snack and grade the quality of the pattie as objectively as possible by scoring them on: 1. Pastry; quality, i.e. texture - softness, flakiness and flavour. 2. Shape; Traditional pattie shape - half circle with crackled edges. 3. Meat; spicy, juicy - Caribbean flavour. Top score 5 for each section and comments on the filling re flavour and look. Top score 15.

TO JERK OR NOT TO JERK
I found this article from an old Newspaper. I think it was the Jamaican Express
With the amount of so called jerk foods that are being advertised in the UK I want to share with you a section of this article. Yous that are cooks will know that rice, crisp and the multitude of other foods that are claiming to be 'jerked' would have a hard time surviving the real jerk cooking experience;
"... Although the spice paste itself (made from thyme, onion, scallion, peppers and pimento) is crucial to the taste of jerk. The method of slow cooking it over a wood fire on pimento (all spice) sticks adds that one of a kind smoky flavour unique to jerk cooked in Jamaica..."
So there is a chance the correct spices have been used but let's stop calling the foods jerk when they haven't been slow cooked or anywhere near a wood or pimento fire!

Long time shop still holding their own and keeping standards high.
I am particularly impressed that there vegetable patties are in wholemeal skin/pastry rather than the same pastry as the meat pattie.
